Grow Your Own!
By Susan Kingston, Registered Holistic Nutritionist.
Hello everyone! With spring around the corner, we are all anxiously awaiting the warm and sunny weather :-)
Today I would like to talk about some key benefits of growing our own food, or, if that is not possible, finding your local organic farmer and buying from them. Choosing our food sources can feel very empowering as it allows us to decide what we put into our own bodies.
If you have an apartment, it is possible to begin growing in your window, and transferring vegetables to the balcony or rooftop to grow vibrantly. If you have land, even better--share it with friends and create a large garden that you can share. By eating from your own garden, you can give yourself the most foundational part of health - nutrient dense, organic food filled with vitamins, minerals and enzymes that are still alive because the food is fresh. As well, you can avoid the fungicidal sprays that are sprayed on vegetables while in transit, and you can taste the freshness and aliveness of your food. It is best to be aware of what happens to food, from seed to market, to know the importance of where your food comes from and what happens before it gets to you. Benefiting from the fruits of our labor also gives us a sense of fulfillment and empowerment.
For myself and my family, we have always grown something such as herbs and tomatoes, and always had a very close relationship with our local farmers. This year we have been blessed with a large property where we will grow a full and abundant garden with lots of variety. An exciting project!
So, this year, if you can, try planting some pots or a garden or find your local organic farmer and reap the many benefits.
Happy Spring Everyone!
